Gaining work experience

Posted by: MKRGF - Posted: January 31, 2021

Hi 🙂

Just wanted to make a post about my past experience and what I want to achieve…

I studied Level 3 Extended BTEC Motorsport at Myerscough college but a year into this I applied and eventually got an electronics apprenticeship at Red Bull Racing F1, where I worked in both the manufacturing and test & inspection electronics department and ended up making parts that were on the cars during race weekends.  I left this apprenticeship after a year and a half in order to start university and get a Motorsport Engineering degree, which I started September just gone.  I will also be doing a Masters in this subject. In the future I want to go back into F1 and hopefully eventually on the race team in some form.

I don’t have much at the track experience which I would love to change whilst I am at uni so am looking for any kind of practical work experience at the moment!  I hope some of you will be able to give me tips on how to gain experience 🙂

Hi Morgan,

Welcome to Student Motorsport, good to have you with us!

We’re looking forward to hearing all about your experience in studying motorsport and what you have been doing to work towards a career in the motorsport industry.

As for tips and advice, we have plenty and alongside the others in the network will support you in any way we can.

It’s great to hear you studied at Myerscough College, I too studied there and completed an HND in Motorsport Engineering a few years ago now when they first introduced the course to the college. I had a fantastic experience and still keep in contact with many of my peers, it’s really where my motorsport networking began.

So firstly how did you find the course and the experience you gained with at college? Was there any particular highlights, I’m assuming the electronics area is of particular interest given your work with Red Bull?

Thanks for replying:)
I loved the course at Myerscough, its the first place I really got chance to experience working on cars properly and I learnt so much even though I was only there for one year. The highlight was probably that it was my first hands on experience in motorsport as opposed to just watching it on the TV. I do definitely enjoy electronics but I’m hoping to find more areas of interest whilst I am at university.

Good Morning Morgan,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Great to hear you enjoyed the course, they do have a big drive to help their students gain technical and hands on experience there. I assume you left the course early to work with Red Bull?

Fantastic to see that your are now at university continuing your pursuit of a career in the industry, you certainly have a good bank of experience to take with you, well done! I see you are studying at UCLAN, I too studied a motorsport degree there, you’ll have a wonderful experience!

So any ideas as to what you are aiming to do in the industry? What sector or job type?

Yeah I left Myerscough early to work with Red Bull, but have stayed in contact with my tutors from there.
I don’t have a set path I want to follow, strategy or being on a travelling race team in some form is what I’d love but I don’t really think I have enough experience in enough fields which is part of what I’m hoping to do at UCLan.
I am also doing some work experience this season with DBR Motorsport in the Heritage Formula Ford championship, which I am really looking forward to.

Good Afternoon Morgan,

So when you say you left the course early, did you complete say 1 year? What role did you leave the course for (I think you mentioned this was Electronics?) and are you still in touch with Red Bull? Perhaps there are opening fr you to aim for after your degree?

Anyway, other than this we’re just checking in to see how things are progressing, I see you have made a connection to DBR Motorsport and one of our members Emma Brown which is great!

So when are you starting at the team and what are you going to be getting in involved in?

Hi Morgan

We are looking forward to you joining us this season and gaining the experience, one week to go until first round! 🙂
