Work Experience

Posted by: nicolepoole_ - Posted: February 15, 2021

Hi, I’m currently studying motorsport at university and looking for some work experience possibly over summer. I have previously worked on cars and have a vague knowledge of race cars. Any experience would be greatly appreciated to extend my learning further.

Thank you.

Hi Nicole,

Welcome to our network, we’re seeing an increasing number of students from universities which is great!

I see you studied motorsport at BTEC level and achieved a D*, what amazing effort!

Can you tell us what course you are studying now, for example, Mechanical Engineering (Motorsport Technology) or perhaps BSc Motorsport?

We also see that you say you have “a vague experience of race cars” which is totally fine, we can help but what experience do you have? You also have no preference which area you gain experience in but we really do have to narrow down what it is you are interested in, now is the time to start focussing your energy on working out what it is you ultimately want to do within the industry both the area and job type.

We’re here to help start to ‘mould’ you so that you can achieve your career goals, it’s really about acting on this now so you get the best start you can.

Also, can we ask are you required or encouraged to find work experience by the university or your tutors, and if so how many hours?

Oh and a Top Tip:

Complete a full Student Motorsport profile (with as much detail as possible) so you get the most out of our network. It’s also nice to be able to ‘put a face to your name’ by adding images. We’re interested in taking a look at your educational background, your interests and of course, see what your aims are, there are future employers out there looking to do the same so stand out!

If you have a completed profile it speaks volumes about you, it’s not just about the posts you create or questions you ask, people want to see who and what type of person creates them.

Hi JP,
Thank you for your reply.
I am currently doing BEng Motorsport Engineering.
Previously at college I have set up a Honda Civic for a race weekend for a BTRDA rallycross race, and then gone on to be pit crew for this. At this moment in time I am more interested in the design and development side of things more than pit crew as I’ve previously done.
I’m not required to do any work experience by my university, however there is the option for a year in industry which I am going to do.

Thank you for the tip on my profile, I have gone through it and improved it.
Thank you again,
Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Thats ok, it is what we’re here for.

Fantastic updates on your profile too, keep up the good work, we want you and your profile to stand out to potential contacts and future employers. It sounds great what you were involved in at Loughborough, they have a great programme and lots of involvement in the industry. That experience although you are now looking for a design and development role will still support your career.

So how are you finding your degree course? Any highlights so far?

With regards to work experience, although you are not required to complete it as a part of your course, the fact that you are looking to complete some speaks volumes about your drive to kick start your career in this vibrant industry.

A year out in the industry is a good move, although it ‘delays’ your graduation by a year, we believe ‘strongly’ goes a long way to shaping you as a person and ensures your skills and knowledge are far more aligned with what is required and expected by the motorsport industry.

We can start to investigate opportunities for you to gain experience in design and development (we have received your work experience request), now that Covid (finger crossed) is easing we are moving into a higher gear to start placing our candidates and will keep in touch on this. In addition more news will become available on our placements page of the website in the coming weeks!
