Work experience – Tips and opportunities

Posted by: JamieGraham02 - Posted: May 13, 2021

Hello my name is Jamie and I’m a first year student at the university of Sheffield looking to gain an opportunity to learn more about this industry. I’ve always had an interest in motorsport but especially since the start of the pandemic I have watched as many F1, F2 and F3 races I possibly could.

In terms of goals from work experience I would either like to build up more physical experience with the building and setting up of cars as the main dream is to work as a Race Engineer, or gaining more computational skills in CFD and CAE engines as these skills are very transferrable to many different sectors of motorsport.

I was wondering if anyone has any work experience opportunities available or tips on how to find it?

Thanks

Good Afternoon Jamie,

Welcome to Student Motorsport, it’s great to have you on board with us!

Your drive to find the experience is great, you seem super focused! Relevant skills, and crucially knowledge is sadly lacking in our industry and is key to getting you on the right path to success, your career and timeline profile are looking very good, well done!

So let’s get started, can you tell us a few things?

1. What sort of racing interests or inspires you, I know you’ve been watching f1-3 recently but, for example, is it more single-seaters or bikes or something farther afield such as air racing or motocross? Is there a preference you have with regards to gaining the more hands-on experience you touched on?

2. Do you have any motorsport experience to date?

3. What has your experience of finding work experience so far been like, and what success and sort of responses have you had?

It’s also great to see you have completed a good bit of information on your Student Motorsport profile which will help you get the most out of our network. Perhaps now add a profile image as it is always nice to be able to ‘put a face to your name’ as they say. Future employers out there will be interested in taking a look at your educational background, your interests and of course, see what your aims are so keep up the good work!

We can start to investigate opportunities for you to gain experience once we have learned a little more about you, now that Covid (finger crossed) is easing we are moving into a higher gear to start looking into placing our candidates and will keep in touch on this. In addition, more news will become available on our placements page of the website in the coming weeks!

As you may know, gaining work experience at the best of times can be tricky but we’ve created a cool document on volunteering here which will help kick start things and give you some top tips from us:

Thanks JP

My main interest is definitely in cars, single seater racing formats to be more specific. Whilst I’ve always had an interest the idea of having a career in the sport has only become an idea since the beginning of lockdown so as of now I have no real practical experience in the sector. I have written to a few different local teams, however am yet to receive a response.

Best,
Jamie
