Hi, Harvey,

Thanks for posting us a question on work experience.

I see from your profile that you are doing well at college and you are already getting involved in motorsport which is great!

In terms of approaching work experience your first step is to narrow down what type of role you are interested in the industry and in which sector. You’ve noted that your industry interests are in mechanics and engineering?

For example a mechanic in Formula Ford racing.

I’d suggest completing the consultation form on our Placements page. That way we can discuss with you what areas you are hoping to gain experience in, and look at how we can help you.

Thanks for signing up!

Hi Harvey,

I see you sent us an enquiry via our Work Experience contact form which is great!

I also see you are interested in motorsport mechanic experience, are there any particular race series or type of cars that you are interested in working with?

We’re also checking in to see if your careers plans are on track or have changed for 2021?

PS. We’ve currently in the process of rolling out the work experience information, plans and packages Covid19 dependant, of course, so please stand by we will be in touch soon to keep you in the loop.

Top Tip: Why not introduce some images to your profile to put a name to your face, a fuller completed profile will be better for when showcasing you to potential, we find career highlights also help with enquiries.

I currently help out prepare a caterham 270r for race weekends competing in the caterham motorsport championship but I am open to any other race series, I would particularly be interested in single seaters if possible. I am currently working at the busiest DHL service point in the south east but am willing to take time off if needed or if a new job came up within a motorsport environment I would join. I have applied for a few different apprenticeships at Mercedes f1 and racing point f1 (Aston Martin). I am currently studying motorsport at east Surrey college and achieved a distinction* for the first year and am on track to achieve the same grade for the second year

Good Morning Harvey,

Apologies a slow response here, I seemed to have missed your reply.

Anyway, thanks for updating us on your racing activities which sound great! The Caterham championship is a fantastic starting point do you take part in race weekends too?

With regards to your job, I’m a great believer in you need a job to find another, so keep at it, sounds like you are well needed there.

So, as noted previously we are in receipt of your work experience request and further information will come, we will contact in due course, we are simply monitoring the Covid situation as you can imagine.

Don’t forget when you next visit your profile to add your Cateham work to your career timeline/highlights, this is something to showcase.

I have to say at this point well done, massively impressive to be achieving D* in that course!

So with regards to your career activities, have you heard anything back from your application, I’d be interested to see what responses you have got so far?

I unfortunately do not take part in the actual racing park but am present at every meeting and I help prepare the car for the races at both at the track and at home (Im not employed by a motorsport team). I have applied for a couple different apprenticeships at Mercedes f1 but I can imagine the competition is very hot for those. I also have a family friend who works for a company that makes and designs the carbon fibre for the f1 teams and I’ve been in contact with them about some work experience and they said I can once they allow visitors back to the company.

Good Afternoon Harvey,

I hope all is well?

Shame you are not able to take part in the actual events, but I am sure that will change this season.

With regards to your application to the F1 apprenticeships, don’t be too hard on yourself they will take a look at your application and the fact that you have relevant/real-life experience will go a long way to supporting your career development. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did contact you as you have something valuable to offer, either way, these things take time and you will most likely get a reply either way so hold out for it.

If you are able to secure they work experience through your F1 contact you must keep us updated, we’re sure many of the members will be interested to see how you are progressing as we will be.

Okay thank you I’ll keep in contact regarding work experience etc and if you hear of anything regarding any jobs/ apprenticeships/ work experience I’d love to hear about it
